Over the last several years, more and more states have passed legislation that makes it mandatory for insurers to have an anti-fraud program. State mandates require the filing of anti-fraud plans, submission of annual anti-fraud reports, and having a fully qualified Special Investigations Unit (SIU). SIUs are required to have investigators that meet specific state requirements, as well as additional training in other to keep their SIU investigator status. The majority of states also require the submission of state suspect/fraudulent reports (SFR’s) to state fraud bureaus, Department of Insurance offices and law-enforcement authorities.
A large majority of states mandate annual anti-fraud training and new hire SIU orientation training within a specific time from the date of hire.
